Mike Huckabee asked Mitt Romney if Mormons believed Jesus and Satan were brothers. The question was asked in such a way as to make Mormons doctrine look weird to Christian Fundamentalists, many of whom support the former governor of Arkansas.
Romney’s response showed the political savvy of the former governor of Massachusetts, but his response misled people who are not familiar with Mormon doctrine. Huckabee’s response shows that he himself did not know much, but for those who wanted to know if Mormons believe that Jesus and Satan are brothers, the answer is yes.
It is important to understand the concept of where all spirits come from in Mormonism and where Jesus, Satan, and even the reader of this article fit into the divine family as Children of God.
Regular readers of the Bible consider the story of Cain and Abel to show the first signs of sibling rivalry in human history, but Mormon doctrine tells its adherents about a war in heaven that took place before the creation of the Earth. At some time in the distant past, God called together all the spirits to announce His plan to have them learn and grow on a place called the Earth. Because the plan called for people to live in mortal bodies and forget what the Mormons call the pre-existence, Jesus and Satan, then known only as Lucifer, came up with plans to guide people back to their Heavenly home.
Under the plan of salvation presented by Lucifer, huanity would not have free will and therefore everyone would come back to their celestial home. The plan presented by Jesus allowed for people to choose whether or not they wanted to follow Heavenly Father’s commandment. Instead of a spirited debate that died down, the heated argument developed into the War in Heaven.
Mike Huckabee’s question would not have been considered odd if the question had been asked under different circumstances. As was pointed out in the article on Heavenly Mother, spirits are produced by an act of conception that involves both a Heavenly Mother and a Heavenly Father.
Jesus was the product of God and his wife on another world, and like his father, Jesus attained exaltation through following the divine plan. Lucifer was born later in the Celestial Kingdom, but because all spirits that have lived on Earth and the spirits who are cast out of heaven share a Heavenly Father, Jesus, Satan and everyone ever born on Earth are literally brothers and sisters.
